Striae is a handwoven typographic artwork constructed from approximately 1000 hand-cut translucent paper strips. Each strip contained text paragraphs from James Joyce’s book Finnegans Wake.
The words in each strip were divided into categories: neologisms, nouns, verbs, foreign words. Each category was then assigned a specific tone of grey to highlight its recurrence through the chapter and book.
The weaving processes and end-results were motivated by a desire to use typographic and physical means to construct a metaphor that was representative and evocative of language as an evolving and complex entity. And it was likewise that the content from Finnegans Wake was chosen.
